Reform Means Planning for Healthcare System Wellness

Wellness is not simply an absence of illness, it is an active process of becoming aware, planning for, and carrying out healthy choices that bring about positive change.

Understanding and maintaining wellness is critical in every one of our lives – and in the lives of the people we serve who are recovering from mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

As members of the behavioral health community, we must engage in the active process of becoming aware, planning for, and carrying on the hard work of healthcare system reform. This kind of healthcare system wellness is our responsibility. Federal healthcare reform legislation is a big step in the right direction. However, maintaining wellness is an ongoing process. In considering the wellness of our healthcare system there are several dimensions we as providers and consumers of healthcare services should be attending to. These dimensions of healthcare system wellness include funding, health information technology, service provision, quality improvement and research. Some examples of the planning and activities we can take part in.

Funding

– Reform the payment system to stop the promotion of paying for procedures and replacing it with payment based on the quality care.

– Aggressive reform of billing practices that stymie providers from making the necessary changes to create seamless healthcare services. Including funding for coordination of care, case management, transportation and allowing providers in every state to bill for more than one service in a day in the same clinic.

Health Information Technology

– The development of patient registries for the uniform collection of clinical and administrative data. Registries will allow for better monitoring and continuity of care while helping to make the business case for behavioral and primary care services integration

– Making sure that our electronic health records are compliant with Health Level Seven (HL7) international interoperability standards. Required by the US Department of Health and Human Services, these standards will enable electronic medical records to exchange, manage and share information between providers.

Service Provision

– Adoption of the healthcare home approach to care. This approach requires a bi-directional care provision which challenges the traditional thinking about how providers work with one another. Specialty mental health and primary care providers must reach out to one another and work in a coordinated fashion to provide disease management services for people with severe mental illness and/or substance use conditions.

– The implementation of wellness programming as a Medical Home standard of care for all people diagnosed with a severe mental illness and/or substance use condition.

– The expansion of peer-led wellness programming as an effective way to promote healthy living and care coordination.

Britons Go Abroad For Healthcare

Britons go abroad for healthcare.

While Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards was out marching to protest against NHS plans to downgrade his local hospital in Chichester a few weekends ago aptly named St. Richards record numbers of Britons continue to fly abroad for medical treatment.

Last year Britons spent 60m on overseas treatments. Main reasons were lower prices, NHS waiting lists, a better choice of alternative medical treatments and cosmetic surgery clinics such as those in Marbella where many patients choose to combine procedures with a break in the sun to return home looking better on the outside and feeling better on the inside. With many increasingly concerned about the rise in hospital superbugs, more people are also choosing to recuperate overseas in a warmer climate following surgery.

Market researchers Mintel recently reported money spent by Britons going abroad for treatments will increase 150% by 2011. According to the survey a quarter of Britons would seriously consider recuperating abroad after an operation and one in eight would go overseas for surgery.

“This sector (medical tourism) is a thriving industry as a growing number of well-off baby boomers take their health needs into their own hands and pursue the elixir of eternal youth,” said Richard Cope, senior Mintel analyst.

But what happens when you fall ill abroad? One of the largest holiday resort companies on the Costa del Sol, Club La Costa, offers onsite medical care at its California Beach Resort near Mijas. Now, thanks to a new contract negotiated between the modern, high tech Xanit Hospital in Benalmadena which opened in 2006, and Club La Costa, the hospitals state-of-the-art facilities and highly trained medical staff are available to both CLC members and staff in Spain.

Richard Fletcher, Resort Director at Club La Costa Resorts & Hotels, said: Weve always made it a priority to have medical provision on site, but our new agreement with Xanit means that should any of our members need medical treatment while on holiday, not only do we have access to one of the top hospitals in southern Spain, its literally minutes away.

As for alternative therapies and keep-fit, Britons seem to be increasingly looking overseas for a better deal. Last year, Britons spent about 25m on going abroad for yoga holidays, holistic healing, health farms beauty treatments and spa visits, according to the Mintel report.

Spain is one of the most visited destinations in Europe for surgery, especially for patients who want to combine medical treatment with a wellness holiday; also popular are Hungary, Turkey, Germany and Poland.

Tenet Healthcare Still Settling Katrina Cases

Over half a decade after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans, Tenet Healthcare Corp. has ultimately settled a class action lawsuit that had been filed against the corporation.

This class action suit mentioned that the healthcare firm which was taking care of patients at Memorial Medical Centre wasn’t prepared for the loss of electrical power following the storm.rm.

In addition to this, it had been explained how the company didn’t adhere to correct evacuation plans, and didn’t take additional needed emergency actions.

As soon as the power had been cut and the levees gave in, the middle of the town started to overflow, and temperatures inside rose to over one hundred degrees Fahrenheit.

This situation left employees and patients trapped without a way of opening the windows or getting aid. The center waited four days for rescuers to arrive, and consequently for many it was too late.

Forty-five bodies had been collected from the medical centre after the storm, the highest quantity from any medical center in the region.

Due to the overwhelming number of deaths, the medical center was placed under significant critique. The Louisiana Attorney General, Charles Foti had three physicians arrested for second-degree murder.

Just after going to the courts, the doctors were discharged, and one of them is already in the process of suing Foti for damage and defamation to her career.

Nevertheless, the employer of those three physicians, Tenet Healthcare Corp. has been in the courts for class actions a number of times since Hurricane Katrina.

They have settled eleven other court cases handling the fundamental matter of neglect. The most current lawsuit which achieved a settlement on Wednesday was concerning Preston and Tenet.

A spokesman for Tenet has claimed the arrangement is “amicable” though no official information have been revealed since the judge still needs to accept the ruling.

All in all, Tenet Healthcare Corp. had to pay over $150 million in damages during the hurricane. Half a dozen of Tenet’s hospitals had been damaged, and the firm had planned to sell several of them around the New Orleans region prior to 2007.

This has been a hard number of years for the Preston family and for the New Orleans region generally. Because of in excess of 1,800 deaths and over $80 billion in damages, the “Big Easy” is still rebuilding even now.

Goal Group Limited is widely-acknowledged in the financial services sector for its innovative and creative solutions to highly-specialised niche issues such as class action claims, or your class action settlement, and class action litigation
